発表題目：The evolutionary psychology of gratitude: A basic human
emotion for initiating and strengthening interpersonal relationships
概要
Gratitude may function to foster human sociality. Exactly how
gratitude performs this possible function, however, is a question that
has received little scientific attention. Many recent
investigations?primarily concerned with the positive emotional
outcomes associated with the experience of gratitude?have overlooked
the fundamental mechanistic operations that permit the very existence
of gratitude. My research addresses this oversight by capitalizing on
advancements in the evolutionary psychological study of function and
internal regulatory variables. I approach gratitude as a psychological
adaptation that functions to coordinate behaviors that initiate and
strengthen interpersonal relationships in conjunction with an internal
regulatory variable responsible for tracking interpersonal welfare
valuation, the Welfare Tradeoff Ratio (WTR). I will present results
from three studies that induced gratitude between strangers (Study
One), friends (Study Two), and siblings (Study Three), and assessed
for changes in WTR. Positive changes in WTRs for strangers coincided
with an emotional response of gratitude and a series of affiliative
behaviors that presumably act to initiate new relationships. Null
changes, as opposed to positive or negative changes, in the already
high WTRs of friends and siblings for each other, also coincided with
gratitude and behaviors that presumably act to strengthen established
bonds.

"Developmentally distinct systems for processing gaze and theory of mind"
講演要旨
Recent exciting work on theory of mind development demonstrates infants'
sensitivity to others' mental states. In this talk I consider whether this
is the same ability shown around 4 years in classic theory of mind tasks,
or whether there are separate systems for theory of mind processing,
analogous to the System 1-System 2 distinction. Gaze understanding is
considered as a test case: understanding perceptual access is
foundational to theory of mind.
Gaze following in infancy appears fast and automatic (System 1); gaze
judgement is not possible until 3 years and appears slow and
deliberative (System 2). Data are presented demonstrating that
the two gaze abilities rely on different perceptual cues.
Gaze following employs only the luminance cues in the eye,
whereas gaze judgement employs both luminance and geometric cues.
This is objective psychophysical evidence for two systems.
Discussion concerns the wider theoretical implications for theory of mind
development.

題目：Making Sense in the Face of Nonsense: How a Search
for Meaning Underlies Many Key Psychological Motivations

講演概要
The meaning maintenance model proposes that people have a need for
meaning; that is, a need to perceive the world through mental
representations of expected relations. When people encounter anomalies
that are inconsistent with their schemas they may affirm or abstract
alternative schemas as a way to regain meaning - even if those schemas are
from domains entirely different from the original meaning threat. This model
provides a common account for people’s reactions to self-esteem threats,
feelings of uncertainty, cognitive dissonance, perceptions of an unjust
world, and mortality salience. Their reactions include increased
defensiveness, increased pattern-learning capability, increased memory
capacity, and increased punitiveness. I will discuss the findings from several
experiments that show the diverse compensatory responses that people
have to a broad range of meaning threats, and the conditions under
which these reactions emerge.

題目：Automatic visual selection.

講演概要
Classic models of attentional control assert a dichotomy between top-down
and bottom-up control, with the former determined by current selection
goals and the latter determined by physical salience. In the present
presentation, I will argue that this theoretical dichotomy is inadequate to
explain a number of cases in which neither current goals nor physical
salience can account for strong selection biases. I will argue that the
salience map that drives automatic selection is notonly determined by raw
physical salience of the objects in the environment but also by the way
these objects are shaped by selection history. I will provide evidence that
priming (feature and reward priming) sharpens the cortical representation of
these objects such that these objects appear to be more salient above and
beyond their physical salience. I will demonstrate that these types of history
effects are not under volitional control: it occurs even if observers try to
volitionally prepare for something else. In other words, looking at red
prepares our brain for things that are red even if we volitionally try to
prepare for green.

講演概要
Cultural psychology is, most famously, the study of how “culture and
psyche make each other up” (Shweder, 1989). Increasingly, the
research of cultural psychologists has exemplified this definition.
Researchers have captured cultural differences not just in people's
emotions, cognitions, and self-reports, but also in tangible, public
representations of culture. These “cultural products” include
advertisements, song lyrics, websites, religious texts, and aggregated
public behaviors such as walking speed or helpfulness. We collected
and meta-analyzed studies in which cultural differences were measured
via cultural products. East Asian cultural products were found to be
more collectivistic and less individualistic than North American
cultural products, and these effect sizes were significantly larger
than those reported in previous meta-analyses of the same dimensions
in self-report. We also analyzed results for other values and
dimensions (such as power distance, positivity, hedonism, focus on
modernity, and use of an explicit message); effect sizes varied,
depending on dimension, region, and nation. We will speculate on the
complexity of the results, recommend other ways to conduct research
on cultural products, and explain why cultural products should
continue to be an important element of cultural psychology research.
