Selected graduate students, post-docs and assistant professors at the Graduate School of Humanities and the Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies will participate in the following training program.


Program for the 1st Year: “Asia Program (October through June)”

 The graduate students spend a maximum of 270 days at one of our overseas partner institutions in Asia and receive training in the field of humanities and/or social sciences. Through this training, they are expected to deepen their understanding of the local society and culture. Post-docs and assistant professors spend more than sixty days at the same partner institutions to carry out their own research about East Asia as well as to serve as mentors for the graduate students.

Program for the 2nd Year: “European and American Program (October through June)”

 The graduate students spend a maximum of 270 days at one of our overseas partner institutions in Europe and North America to study the tradition of East-Asian Studies in the west and to reconsider the ideas and concepts that they acquired through their participation in the Asian Program. They are trained to develop their own theoretical approach that can contribute to the East Asian Studies in the world. Post-docs and assistant professors spend more than sixty days at the same partner institutions to develop their own work on East Asian Studies and to help the graduate students as local mentors.



Program for the 3rd Year: “Preparation of Doctoral Dissertation in English and Another Language and Its Overseas Publication”

 The graduate students complete their doctoral dissertations and obtain a doctoral degree. With the help of ITP Endorsement Committee, they translate their dissertations into English and a third language with a view to publishing them abroad.



Program for the 4th and 5th Years: “Organization of a Colloquium or Intensive Seminar”
 The graduate students design a symposium at an international conference on Asian Studies or organize a colloquium on the same subject; they are expected to develop their skill to design and organize an international research meeting as well as to make a grand design of a new symbiosis society in East Asia.
