Kobe Philosophy Seminar Series (12): When Do the Senses Lie? (2025年10月22日(水))

Perceptual experience is a source of knowledge. There is much we can find out about our surroundings by relying on perception. Occasionally, though, we are misled when perceiving: we arrive at a wrong view about our surroundings. We take objects to be larger or smaller than they actually are, have shapes they do not have, or be closer or further way than they are actually located. But what exactly leads us to the wrong view in those cases? What exactly is the source of error? It is widely held that, in many such cases, the senses lie: they afford us perceptual experiences that conflict with how the environment actually is. We will consider some well-known cases which are meant to be instances of such deception. We will consider whether they are, in fact, deceptive in the relevant way - and, subsequently, whether any experience could be deceptive in that way. This will allow us to consider a certain view of perceptual experience and its relation to questions about the nature of consciousness.
